Dalian Sunasia Ocean World, located along the coast near Xinghai Bay, is one of Dalian's two major marine-life parks and is credited as a pioneer of the third generation of aquariums in China. Operated by a publicly listed tourism company, it has become a major cultural and tourism brand in northeast China, recognized as both a national 4A-level attraction and a national cultural-industry demonstration base. Together with nearby Xinghai Square and the Shell Museum, it anchors one of Dalian's most visited tourism clusters.

The park's signature experience is its undersea tunnel, a transparent walkway through a massive aquarium that surrounds visitors with sharks, rays, sea turtles, and schools of pelagic fish. The design emphasis is on immersive, continuous views rather than isolated tanks, which gives the visit a more cinematic quality than a conventional aquarium. Additional zones focus on polar animals — penguins, polar bears, arctic foxes — and on dolphins and belugas, with several daily performance shows.

The dolphin and beluga shows, in particular, are choreographed to music and lighting in a way that blurs the line between circus, theater, and education. These productions have helped redefine what a Chinese marine park can be, and the company has exported its format to other Chinese cities. The science-education dimension is woven through the exhibits, with emphasis on marine conservation and species protection.

For travelers, the choice between Sunasia Ocean World and Laohutan Ocean Park — Dalian's two flagship marine attractions — often comes down to location and interest. Sunasia, beside Xinghai Square, is more centrally located and more focused on immersive exhibits; Laohutan, on the southern coast, is larger and more oriented toward performances and outdoor coastal scenery. Both are easily worth a half-day; visitors with limited time should pick the one that best fits their itinerary and avoid trying to do both on the same day.
