Zoológico forestal de Dalian

The Dalian Forest Zoo occupies a 7.2-square-kilometer site in the Baiyun Mountain scenic area along Dalian's southern coast, making it one of the largest urban zoos in northeast China. Built on the principle of giving animals near-natural habitats rather than cramped cages, the zoo is divided into a walk-through "free-range" zone and a more traditional enclosed zone, connected by footpaths, boardwalks, and a scenic cable car. For families and wildlife enthusiasts visiting Dalian, it offers one of the most rewarding zoo experiences in northern China.

The animal collection is broad — more than two hundred species and several thousand individual animals, including Siberian tigers, pandas, giraffes, elephants, primates, and a large variety of birds. The free-range zone, in particular, is designed around large open enclosures where herbivores such as zebras, deer, and camels roam with limited barriers, allowing visitors to observe natural behaviors. The landscaping takes advantage of the site's coastal topography, with wooded hillsides, streams, and viewpoints over the sea.

Beyond its role as a visitor attraction, the Forest Zoo is designated as a science-education base by national, provincial, and municipal authorities, and it participates in breeding programs for endangered species. Educational signage, feeding sessions, and keeper talks are scheduled throughout the day, especially during school-holiday periods. The botanical side of the collection — more than three hundred plant species — adds another dimension to the visit.

The site is large and hilly, so visitors should allow a full day and wear comfortable walking shoes. The on-site cable car, which connects the two main zones and offers sea views along the way, is worth budgeting for. Spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild and the foliage is at its best, are the most pleasant times to visit. The zoo can be paired with a trip to the nearby coastal scenic drive and the Baiyun Mountain viewpoints.
