The Baili Sky Road, also known as the Yunzhong Sky Road, is one of northern China's most celebrated high-plateau driving routes, winding roughly a hundred kilometers along the ridges of the mountains above Fengning county northwest of Chengde. At an average elevation of nearly two thousand meters, it threads through a landscape of rolling grasslands, spinning wind turbines, alpine meadows, and fields of wildflowers that change color through the seasons. Driving the full length, you crest ridgelines that open onto wide horizons, with views said to reach three valleys on a clear day. The road climbs in and out of clouds, and the weather can shift quickly, so the experience feels at times like crossing a high pass in the morning and rolling through a summer meadow at noon. There are scenic pull-offs where you can stop for photos, short walks along the flower-strewn ridges, and chances to stretch your legs at viewpoints overlooking the Bashang grasslands.

The route is really only practical by car. A standard sedan can handle it in good weather, but the high altitude and exposure mean conditions can be challenging in rain or early cold, so check the forecast and avoid the road after dark. The best season runs from early summer through early autumn, when the wildflowers are at their peak and the air is crisp; outside that window, the plateau turns cold and windy quickly. Bring layers, water, and snacks, as services are limited along the way.

The Baili Sky Road fits naturally into a Fengning Bashang grassland itinerary, pairing well with stops at the surrounding grassland resorts, Mulan Paddock, and the smaller forest and wetland areas of the region.
