Pradera de Bashang en Fengning

Fengning Bashang Grassland is one of the closest and most accessible stretches of the Mongolian plateau to Beijing, a sweeping grassland in the northwest of Fengning county that has long been a favorite summer escape. Centered on the town of Datian, it sits where the North China Plain gives way to high meadows, and its mix of clear streams, shoulder-high grass, grazing flocks, and open sky makes it a classic image of the northern frontier. For travelers wanting a taste of grassland China without venturing deep into Inner Mongolia, it is an easy and rewarding choice.

The landscape here is gentle and pastoral rather than dramatic. Rolling meadows unfold beneath big skies, with horses, cattle, and sheep grazing among the wildflowers, and small streams threading through low ground. Visitors come to ride horses, take a sunset walk onto the ridges, sample roasted lamb and other Mongolian-influenced dishes at family-run guesthouses, and simply enjoy the cooler air that comes with the altitude. Summer is the peak season, when the grass is tall and the weather offers a real break from the heat of the cities, with cool evenings even in July. Autumn is quieter and stunning as the grass turns gold, though nights get cold quickly. Fengning Bashang pairs naturally with other nearby grassland and forest destinations in the region, and it works well as the base for a two- or three-day loop out of Chengde or Beijing.
