Huadeng Opera is a traditional theater form widespread across Guizhou, evolved from folk lantern song-dance and dramatic performance; its origins trace to the mid-Ming dynasty, and over four-plus centuries it developed distinct local schools in Guiyang, Zunyi and Tongren.

Performance centers on distinctive movement conventions—the 'dwarf step,' trailing sleeves and fan flourishes—combined with local folk melodies and work chants; the music is lively and accessible, and the repertoire is drawn from everyday domestic life.

Inscribed in 2006 on the first national ICH list, Guizhou Huadeng Opera is the province's most representative Han folk theater, carrying the rich legacy of folk music and dramatic culture across central Guizhou.
