Yanzhi Mountain Forest Park is a forested mountain area east of Zhangye, named for a historical term associated with the ancient nomadic peoples of the Gansu corridor. The park sits at altitude on the northern slopes of the Qilian range, and its landscape of forest, meadow, and cooler air offers a clear contrast to the painted Danxia hills and canyon country for which Zhangye itself is best known.

The mountain has long been woven into the historical identity of the Hexi Corridor, appearing in early Chinese poetry and historical records associated with the frontier conflicts and exchanges between the ancient nomadic confederations of the steppe and the Han dynasty. For a Zhangye itinerary, Yanzhi Mountain works best as a summer addition for travelers with their own transport and an extra day to spend beyond the headline Danxia attractions.
