The Jiaohe Post Station and Karez Source (Jiaohe Yi · Kanerjing Yuan) is a cultural heritage site on the eastern outskirts of Turpan city, Xinjiang, that reconstructs and interprets the infrastructure of the Tang-era Silk Road. The site combines two related themes: the post-station network that once relayed official correspondence, merchants, and travelers along the routes into the Tarim Basin, and a working source point of the karez underground irrigation system that has supplied the Turpan oasis for centuries.

The post-station reconstruction is organized around a series of scenes intended to evoke a journey along the imperial relay route from Chang'an, the Tang capital, westward through Liangzhou, the Jade Gate Pass, and finally to Jiaohe, the ancient city outside modern Turpan. Halls display reproductions of courier equipment, maps, and signage explaining how information, officials, and goods moved across the Silk Road's relay network at a pace unmatched again in the region until modern times.

The karez section of the site is the more substantive element for most visitors. A protected shaft and underground gallery, identified as a historical source point of a local karez line, can be entered on foot. Inside, the temperature drops sharply and snowmelt runs along the cut stone channel, giving a direct sensory sense of the engineering that made settlement possible on the desert floor. Interpretive signage explains the four-part structure of the karez, the seasonal rhythm of maintenance, and the social organization of the hereditary workers who dug the tunnels.

The site also includes a large drying house for grapes, a grape trellis promenade, a beacon tower reconstruction, and a "horse gang" courtyard evoking the camel and horse caravans that once carried goods along the desert routes. These elements are staged rather than ruin-level authentic, and international visitors looking for primary archaeological material should plan to pair the visit with the nearby Jiaohe Ruins, the genuine ancient city after which the post station is named.

The Jiaohe Post Station site is easy to reach from Turpan city and is typically visited in about an hour, either as an introduction to the karez system on arrival in the basin or as a supplementary stop alongside the Turpan Museum and one of the two main karez parks. English signage is limited, so an English-language guide enriches the experience considerably.
