Karez-Folklore-Park

The Karez Folk Park (Kanerjing Minsu Yuan) in Turpan, Xinjiang, is an open-air cultural site dedicated to the karez, the traditional underground irrigation system that has sustained oasis agriculture in the Tarim and Turpan basins for more than two thousand years. A karez consists of a series of vertical shafts sunk at intervals along an underground channel that carries snowmelt from the foot of the mountains to fields and villages by gravity alone, without pumps or surface evaporation.

At Turpan, the system reached its highest density in China, with historical counts of more than a thousand functioning karez lines supplying the city's grapes, melons, and grain. The Folk Park preserves a section of working karez and presents its construction, maintenance, and social organization through a sequence of walk-in galleries, restored surface features, and demonstrations of the manual digging techniques that hereditary karez workers once used.

Beyond the engineering story, the park introduces visitors to the vernacular culture of the Turpan oasis. Reconstructed courtyard houses, a small collection of agricultural tools, and spaces for music and dance performances frame the karez not as a static artifact but as the foundation of local rural life. Exhibits place the system in the wider context of Silk Road exchange, since comparable underground channels appear across Central Asia, Iran, and the Arabian Peninsula, all adapting the same idea to arid mountain-and-oasis geography.

The walk through the park takes roughly an hour and includes the chance to descend into a short section of underground channel, where the temperature drops sharply and the sound of flowing water is constant. The site is fully signed in Chinese and partially in English, with guides available for groups who reserve ahead. For independent international travelers, the park works well as a brief, accessible stop on the way into Turpan or as a paired visit with the Jiaohe Ruins, which lies only a short distance to the west.

Because the karez underwrites every other landscape in the Turpan Basin, from Grape Valley to the ancient city of Gaochang, most travelers find that visiting the Folk Park early in a Turpan stay adds meaning to every subsequent site. It is one of the clearest places in Xinjiang to grasp how oasis civilization was physically built in the desert.
