Über Erster Pass unter dem Himmel
The First Pass Under Heaven is the great east gate tower of the Shanhaiguan fortifications in Qinhuangdao, and one of the most iconic single structures on the entire Ming Great Wall. The name comes from the four huge characters carved on a wooden plaque hung across the tower, Tianxia Diyi Guan, a title that translates as the "First Pass Under Heaven" and that captures the historical importance of this gateway between inner China and the northeast. As part of the Great Wall of China, the tower is included within a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage listing and ranks among the first batch of national 5A-level tourist attractions in China.
The tower itself is the architectural centerpiece of the Shanhaiguan garrison city, standing atop the east gate of the old wall and dominating the surrounding streetscape. Built in the Ming dynasty and restored several times since, it is a sturdy, multi-eaved structure of brick and timber designed both as a defensive strongpoint and as a symbol of imperial authority. Climbing to the upper level, visitors can look out over the surviving city walls, the grid of old lanes within the garrison, and the flat coastal plain stretching away toward the Bohai Sea, taking in exactly the view the garrison's defenders once watched over.
The famous plaque is the single most recognizable feature of the tower, and its four bold characters are among the most reproduced images associated with the Great Wall. The fortification system around the tower is also part of the experience, with stretches of the old city wall, secondary gates, and defensive works still visible and walkable, giving a real sense of how the pass functioned as a layered defensive complex rather than a single wall. Inside the wider scenic zone, exhibits and displays add context to the tower's role within the Ming military system and the long history of the frontier it guarded.
The First Pass Under Heaven sits at the heart of the Shanhaiguan area and is most often visited alongside the nearby Laolongtou seaward wall and the Jiaoshan mountain section to the north, all of them part of the same Great Wall complex. As one of the most historically significant and most carefully protected sites on the Great Wall, it is an essential stop for any traveler interested in China's frontier history, and its combination of monumental architecture, layered meaning, and UNESCO-recognized heritage makes it one of the standout sights in Qinhuangdao.
