Über Löwen-Berg
Lion Mountain rises on the western edge of Lijiang Old Town and is one of the more accessible high points in the city, offering visitors a chance to look down over the historic center from above. Its modest elevation relative to the surrounding old town makes it a practical spot for panoramic views without the altitude challenges of destinations like Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
The hill takes its name from its shape, which is said to resemble a crouching lion, and it has long been intertwined with the story of Lijiang Old Town itself. Historically, the Mu family, the hereditary rulers who governed the Lijiang area for centuries, built their estate on the hilltop, and Lion Mountain has therefore served as both a natural landmark and a seat of local power overlooking the old town below. Today, Wangu Pavilion stands on the summit as its most prominent structure, continuing the hill's role as the city's natural viewing tower.
The hill is largely wooded, with paths winding up through the trees toward the summit area, where Wangu Pavilion and other viewpoints provide sweeping vistas over the tiled rooftops of Lijiang Old Town below, with the wider Lijiang basin and, on clear days, distant mountains visible beyond. The contrast between the greenery of the hill and the dense historic architecture of the old town at its base makes for a distinctive perspective on the city's layout and setting.
A walk up Lion Mountain typically takes less than an hour at a relaxed pace, making it an easy add-on rather than a major excursion in its own right. The paths are generally well maintained, though some sections involve a moderate incline, so comfortable footwear is recommended.
Because of its central location right beside Lijiang Old Town, Lion Mountain is one of the simplest ways to get an elevated view of the city, and it pairs naturally with a walking tour of the old town itself, often visited toward the end of a day of exploring the streets below.
