Über Blue-Moon-Tal

Blue Moon Valley sits at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain near Lijiang, formed by the White Water River as it flows down from the mountain's melting snow and ice. The valley is renowned for its strikingly clear, vividly blue-tinted pools, a color that results from the mineral content and depth of the glacially-fed water, creating a scene that feels almost otherworldly against the mountain backdrop.

The valley is made up of four connected lakes, each with its own distinct character and poetic local name, along with a series of small waterfalls and cascades that link them together. Wooden and stone walkways allow visitors to move along the water's edge, taking in views of the pools from different angles and pausing at photogenic spots where the blue water contrasts with the surrounding rock and, in season, forested slopes. The area is particularly popular for photography given the unusual clarity and color of the water.

A visit to Blue Moon Valley typically takes an hour or two, and the walking is generally easy, making it accessible to most visitors regardless of fitness level. Because it sits at altitude within the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area, comfortable footwear and layered clothing are still advisable, and mornings tend to offer calmer water and softer light for photos.

As part of the broader Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic zone, Blue Moon Valley is commonly combined with a cable car ride up the mountain and, for many visitors, an evening performance of Impression Lijiang, rounding out a full day trip from the old town.
