Ehemaliges britisches Konsulat in Takao (Kaohsiung)

The Former British Consulate at Takao Residence is a historic colonial-era building perched on the hillside above Sizihwan, overlooking the entrance to Kaohsiung Harbor. It is one of the oldest surviving Western-style structures in Taiwan and a reminder of the period in the late nineteenth century when Takao (as Kaohsiung was then known in English) was opened as a treaty port to international trade. For visitors interested in the layered colonial history of East Asian port cities, the site is one of the most evocative in southern Taiwan.

The name "Takao" deserves a brief explanation. It derives from a word in the language of the local plains indigenous people meaning "bamboo forest", rendered in early Chinese records phonetically as "Dagou" and often translated literally as "beating dog". In the early twentieth century the name was changed to "Kaohsiung", three characters chosen in part because their Japanese pronunciation sounded similar to the older name. The consulate's English name preserves the earlier form, which is itself a piece of port history.

The building itself is a small, well-proportioned bungalow in the Western colonial style, with thick masonry walls, verandas, and arched openings designed for the subtropical climate. It was built by the British authorities to house the consular staff responsible for overseeing trade at the port. Restored in recent decades, it now functions as a museum, with period rooms and exhibits on the commercial, diplomatic, and maritime history of treaty-port Takao.

For international visitors, the site offers two distinct pleasures. The first is the architecture and the curated interiors, which give a concrete sense of how foreign merchants and diplomats lived in a nineteenth-century East Asian port. The second is the view. From the terraces and the garden paths surrounding the consulate, visitors look out over the harbor entrance, Sizihwan, and the skyline across the water, making the site one of the most photographed viewpoints in the city. The climb to the consulate is short but steep; allow ninety minutes for a relaxed visit, longer at sunset.
