Kuppel des Lichts, Formosa-Boulevard-Station

The Dome of Light at Formosa Boulevard Station is one of the largest glass-art installations in the world and the most celebrated piece of public art in Kaohsiung. Located in the underground rotunda of one of the city's principal metro interchanges, the dome was designed by the Italian artist Narcissus Quagliata and assembled in Germany from individual panels of hand-blown glass. For most visitors, it is the single most surprising sight in the city's metro system, and one of the strongest public-art commissions in any Asian transit network.

The work is composed of four thematic sections, arranged around a circular opening roughly thirty metres in diameter. Each quadrant addresses a different aspect of the human condition, drawn together under the overarching theme of love and inclusion. Quagliata's narrative moves through birth, growth, creativity, destruction, and rebirth, and the colour palette shifts dramatically between sections, from warm reds and yellows to cool blues and greens. The total surface area of the dome is roughly six hundred and sixty square metres, large enough to fully dominate the rotunda when viewed from below.

The commission took nearly four years to complete, and the result has been recognised internationally. Formosa Boulevard Station was named one of the world's most beautiful metro stations by international travel publications shortly after the dome's installation, an accolade that has made it a regular stop on Kaohsiung walking itineraries. The dome is particularly impressive during the daytime, when sunlight filters through the station's overhead openings, and during scheduled light shows that animate the work in the evening.

For international visitors, the Dome of Light is best visited as a short, focused stop, since the rotunda is a transit interchange rather than a museum. Most travellers spend fifteen to thirty minutes photographing and reading about the work before continuing on the metro. The station's central location makes it a natural pivot point for any itinerary through Kaohsiung, and the dome is best combined with a visit to the adjacent Liuhe Night Market, which sits directly above the station and comes alive after dark.
