Laohutan Polar-Meerestierwelt

The Laohutan Polar Marine Animals World is a major zone within the larger Laohutan Ocean Park on Dalian's southern coast, dedicated to the animal life of the polar regions and the cold oceans. Widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive polar-animal facilities in China, it is an integral part of the 5A-rated Laohutan scenic cluster and a flagship attraction for families visiting Dalian. For travelers with limited time in the city, it is often the single most memorable stop in the ocean park.

The facility is large — tens of thousands of square meters of floor space — and is built around a series of carefully designed habitats that house beluga whales, polar bears, walruses, sea otters, penguins, arctic foxes, and a variety of seals and sea lions. Many of these species were exhibited for the first time in mainland China at this site, which has helped establish the park's national reputation. A full day at the park easily absorbs the polar exhibits, the dolphin and sea-lion shows, the coastal walks, and the Fisherman's Wharf next door. The polar facility is particularly popular with families, and queueing for the most popular shows is most manageable in the first hour after opening. Bring a light layer, since the indoor exhibits are kept cool for the animals' welfare.
