Baiyu-Berg Landschaftsgebiet

Baiyu Mountain (Baiyushan) is a 4A-rated scenic area in Lüshun (Port Arthur) on the southern tip of the Dalian peninsula, rising above the historic naval harbor that has played such a central role in the modern history of northeast Asia. The mountain, whose name means "White Jade," is one of the most historically charged viewpoints in the region, offering a commanding panorama over the Lüshun harbor, the town, and the wider coastline that has been contested by Chinese, Japanese, and Russian forces across the past century and a half.

The summit is reached by road, by footpath, or by a small cable car, and is crowned by a tall white tower that is the mountain's most prominent landmark. From the observation terraces around the summit, visitors can see the narrow entrance to the Lüshun harbor — the same channel that is visible from the Military Port Park below — along with the inner harbor, the old town of Lüshun, and the layered hills that surround the port on three sides. The view makes immediately clear why this harbor has been so coveted: its natural defenses and deep-water anchorages are among the best on the Chinese coast.

The historical weight of the site is inescapable. Lüshun was the focal point of the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894–1895, the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905, and decades of Japanese colonial administration, before being returned to Chinese control and later used as a Soviet and then Chinese naval base. Monuments, fortifications, and interpretive materials on the mountain reflect this layered history, although English-language context is limited.

For travelers, Baiyu Mountain is best visited as part of a wider Lüshun historical circuit, alongside the Lüshun Museum, the Military Port Park, the Submarine Museum, and the 203 Highland. Allow a half-day for the mountain itself, and a full day for the Lüshun loop. The summit is exposed, so a wind layer is useful, and visibility is best on clear autumn and winter days.
