An Erhai Lake cruise is one of the classic ways to experience the lake that defines Dali. Departing from piers such as Longkan, Caicun, or Xiaguan, the larger cruise vessels carry passengers across the open blue expanse of Erhai, with the full sweep of the Cangshan range on one side and the rolling hills of the east bank on the other. For travelers with limited time, or those who simply prefer a slower, more contemplative experience of the landscape, a cruise offers the most comprehensive panorama available in a single outing.

The route typically includes stops at one or two of Erhai's islands, most often Nanzhao Folk Island off the village of Shuanglang. Here passengers can step off to explore the island's landscaped grounds, the white-marble Guanyin statue, and the rebuilt palace compound, or simply walk the shore for views back to the Cangshan peaks. On longer cruises, the small islet of Xiaoputu, with its diminutive Buddhist shrine, appears as a perfect miniature floating on the water, and the white egrets that patrol the lake often escort the boat.

Many of the larger cruises feature a performance of Bai san dao cha — the "three-course tea" ceremony — accompanied by traditional song and dance. The ceremony, a Bai custom of welcoming guests, offers three cups of tea with distinct flavors symbolizing the stages of life: bitter, sweet, and aftertaste. The performance adds a cultural dimension to the cruise, giving travelers a brief but vivid introduction to Bai customs without leaving the lake.

For the best experience, plan around the light. Morning cruises offer the cleanest air and the clearest views of Cangshan snow, while late-afternoon departures deliver the warm colors of sunset over the western peaks. Bring sun protection — the Yunnan UV is intense even on overcast days — and a light layer for the breeze on the open deck. Most cruises run two to four hours and can be combined with a village stop or a meal in one of the lakeside Bai communities.
