The Changchun Zoological and Botanical Park is a 4A-level park in the Nanguan district of Changchun that combines a zoo, botanical garden, family leisure zone, and an unexpectedly famous night show into a single sprawling destination. Covering roughly 72 hectares, with around 56 hectares of green space and nearly nine hectares of water, it is one of the largest urban green spaces in the city and a popular outing for local families, visiting children, and travelers curious about Dongbei-style park culture.

During the day, the park functions as a conventional and well-shaded zoological and botanical garden. Paths wind past enclosures housing Asian elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, and dozens of smaller species, with a particular emphasis on educational programming. Keepers run scheduled science talks and feeding sessions for animals such as the red panda, hippopotamus, and Asian elephant, and the plant collections, with thousands of trees and shrubs on the grounds, make the park as much an arboretum as a zoo.

What sets the Changchun Zoological and Botanical Park apart from a typical city zoo is its nighttime programming. The park has become a viral destination for its immersive Journey to the West shows, performed across a main stage and more than a dozen smaller stages scattered through the grounds. Authorized by the beloved 1986 CCTV television adaptation, the performances retell episodes from the classic Ming-dynasty novel with costumed characters, music, and interactive moments. The crowd-favorite comedic feeding bit underneath the Five Elements Mountain has become a small internet phenomenon in China, and thousands of lantern installations turn the park into a dreamlike landscape after dark.

A leisure camping area rounds out the offerings, giving families a quieter zone for picnics and rest between shows. The blend of traditional zoo, botanical collection, and theatrical night spectacle is unusual enough that Chinese visitors have half-jokingly described the park as the theme park best suited to local tastes, a reflection of its broad appeal across age groups.

For foreign travelers, the park offers an accessible, low-pressure afternoon or evening in Changchun. The animal exhibits are familiar in format, while the Journey to the West night show is a memorable, only-in-Dongbei cultural experience, even without fluency in the source material.
