Yuanming New Garden

Yuan Ming Xin Yuan — the "New Yuan Ming Garden" — is a large park in Zhuhai that recreates, at full scale, eighteen of the forty celebrated scenic vistas of the Old Summer Palace in Beijing, the imperial garden complex that was sacked and burned by Anglo-French forces in 1860. Rather than a historical site, the park is a deliberate reconstruction, built to evoke the lost splendor of one of China's most famous imperial landscapes and to give visitors in southern China a sense of its architectural character without traveling to Beijing.

Inside the park, the grounds are divided into three main architectural zones — an imperial palace complex, a Jiangnan-style garden quarter, and a Western-style section — mirroring the structure of the original Yuan Ming Yuan. The reconstructed halls, pavilions, lakes, and corridors reproduce the broad outlines of the lost original, and while the buildings are modern replicas rather than aged structures, the sheer scale of the complex and the careful attention to imperial garden proportion give visitors a tangible sense of what was destroyed. Live performances, including stage shows dramatizing scenes from the garden's history, are staged at intervals and add a theatrical dimension to the visit.

For foreign visitors, Yuan Ming Xin Yuan is best approached as a themed historical park rather than as an authentic heritage site, since nothing on the grounds predates the park's modern construction. With that framing in mind, it offers an accessible and photogenic introduction to the aesthetics of the Qing imperial garden tradition, and the reconstructed Western-style pavilions carry an added layer of historical interest, since their counterparts in Beijing were among the structures most famously lost in the nineteenth century. A relaxed visit fills a half-day, and the park's central Zhuhai location makes it easy to combine with the seaside promenade and the Fishing Girl statue nearby.
