Zhangye Qicai Danxia (Rainbow Mountains) Scenic Area

The Zhangye Seven-Color Danxia Scenic Area is the marquee attraction of Zhangye and one of the most photographed geological landscapes in northwest China, a sprawling field of brightly colored rolling hills at the foot of the Qilian Mountains. Now both a national 5A-level tourist attraction and a UNESCO-listed World Geopark, the site is widely regarded as the finest example of a colorful Danxia landform combined with rolling color-stripe hills anywhere in the country.

The color comes from layered sandstone and mudstone deposited over long stretches of geological time, with varying mineral content, particularly iron oxides, producing bands of red, ochre, yellow, orange, and occasional blue-gray that stripe the hillsides. Tectonic uplift then tilted and folded these layers, and subsequent erosion sculpted them into the smooth, flowing curves visible today, an unusual combination of stratigraphy and weathering that gives the landscape its distinctive painted appearance. The result is a terrain that looks almost artificial in its saturation, particularly in the hours around sunrise and sunset when low light intensifies the reds and oranges.

The park is organized around several principal viewing platforms, each positioned to overlook a different sweep of colored hills and named for the shape or character of the formations they showcase, with connecting shuttle buses moving visitors between them. Walking out onto each platform reveals a new composition of ridgelines and valleys, and the scale of the site only becomes clear from these elevated viewpoints, since the hills stretch on across a wide area beyond the developed visitor zone.
