Helan Mountain National Forest Park

Ningxia Helan Mountain National Forest Park, located about 50 kilometers west of downtown Yinchuan, is the most accessible gateway for visitors who want to experience the ecological side of the mountain range that defines Ningxia's western skyline. Helan Mountain acts as a natural wall shielding the Yinchuan Plain from the cold deserts of Inner Mongolia, and its cooler, forested slopes provide a popular escape from the summer heat of the basin below.

The park's scenery is shaped by altitude. Lower elevations give way to forests of Chinese pine, juniper, and dragon spruce, with dense tree cover that breaks into clearings with views across the Yinchuan Plain toward the Yellow River. Higher up, the ridgeline becomes more rugged, with exposed rock faces and lookout points where, on a clear day, visitors can see both the snow-dusted peaks of the range and the irrigated farmlands stretching east. The Suyukou and Roll-Shell Ridge scenic corridors are the two most popular routes for day-trippers.

Wildlife is one of the park's biggest draws. Helan Mountain is a recognized biodiversity refuge, and the blue sheep, known locally as the rock sheep, is the emblematic animal of the range. Visitors also regularly encounter red deer, and the park is home to the rare blue eared pheasant, a protected species native to the mountains of western China. Birdlife is rich across the year, and the alpine meadows burst into wildflower bloom in mid-summer.

For independent travelers based in Yinchuan, the forest park is a half-day or full-day trip that pairs well with the nearby Helan Mountain Rock Art site or the Western Xia Mausoleums, since all three sites lie along the same mountain front. Hiking options range from short loop walks to longer ridge climbs, and sunrise and night-sky viewing are popular among photographers — the dry air of the Ningxia region produces some of the clearest skies in northern China. Bring layered clothing, as temperatures on the mountain are noticeably cooler than in the city below.
