Xuzhou Han Culture Scenic Area

The Xuzhou Han Culture Scenic Area is a large dedicated park on the eastern edge of central Xuzhou, uniting several of the city's most important Western Han Dynasty sites within a single walkable zone. Often described as the open-air centerpiece of Han heritage tourism in Xuzhou, it is built around the so-called "Three Wonders of the Han": the Han Terracotta Warriors Museum, the Lion Hill Chu King Tomb, and the Han Stone Relief Corridor. For travelers who want to understand the Han Dynasty in one concentrated stop, this is the place to begin.

The Han Terracotta Warriors Museum holds thousands of small-scale figurines of soldiers, discovered here decades before many visitors realized Xuzhou had its own "terracotta army" to rival Xi'an's. Nearby, the underwater display hall preserves a portion of the figures in situ, letting you see how the figures were arranged when excavated. A short walk away, the Lion Hill Chu King Tomb is carved straight into the hillside, its labyrinth of stone passages and chambers offering one of the most atmospheric underground experiences in eastern China.

The Han Stone Relief Corridor showcases carved stone slabs from the Han period, depicting mythology, daily life, music and dance, and martial contests. These reliefs are one of the most distinctive art forms of the Han Dynasty, and the collection here is among the richest in the country. Rounding out the complex are the Queen's Tomb at Yang Guishan, the Liu Clan Ancestral Hall, and the Bamboo Forest Temple, which together turn the site into a full day of immersive Han-themed exploration.

The site is well equipped for visitors, with bilingual signage, rest areas, and clear walking routes linking the main halls. Wear comfortable shoes, as the grounds are extensive and the tomb chambers involve stairs and uneven surfaces. Bring water in summer, when shade is limited between buildings. Allow at least three to four hours to do the site justice, and more if you are traveling with a deep interest in Han archaeology.

For independent travelers, the Han Culture Scenic Area is the easiest way to experience the breadth of Xuzhou's Han legacy without having to chase tombs scattered across the wider region. Pair it with the Xuzhou Museum downtown for a complete picture of the Chu kings and the city they ruled.
