Zongka Laze Scenic Area

The Zongka Laze Scenic Area is a religious-cultural site on the ridge of South Mountain above Xining, and one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist "laze" (lab-tse, or peak shrines) in the Amdo Tibetan cultural region of eastern Qinghai. The name "Zongka" refers to the birthplace of Tsongkhapa — the 14th-century founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism — and the site is part of the wider sacred geography associated with the Kumbum Monastery area to the west of the city.

A lab-tse is a distinctive Tibetan religious structure: a tower-like heap of prayer flags, wooden spears, deer antlers, ceremonial arrows, and other auspicious offerings, built on a mountain summit or pass to mark a sacred peak or to honor the local deity of the place. They are common across the Tibetan cultural world but rarely seen at this scale, and the Zongka Laze above Xining is one of the most impressive examples accessible to non-Tibetan visitors without trekking into remote areas.

The approach to the site involves a winding drive or hike up the South Mountain ridge, with views back over the Xining basin opening up as you climb. At the summit, the laze itself dominates the foreground — a multistory tower of bright prayer flags and wooden spears, surrounded by cairns, individual prayer-flag poles, and the small shrines set up by generations of pilgrims. The wind at the summit is constant, and the movement of the flags gives the site its kinetic, almost electric, atmosphere.

For Tibetan pilgrims, the site has real spiritual weight. Zongka Laze is visited by residents of Xining, pilgrims from across the Amdo region, and travelers passing between the city and the western grasslands. Visitors — Tibetan or foreign — typically walk clockwise around the laze, offer prayer flags, and pause for contemplation at the summit.

For independent travelers, the Zongka Laze is a worthwhile short stop for those interested in Tibetan religion and plateau culture. The combination of an authentic Tibetan sacred site with a sweeping view of the Xining basin is unusual, and the climb up the mountain is itself a pleasant excursion. Dress warmly — even in summer the wind at the summit can be sharp.
