Yubulu Tiankeng (Sinkhole) Scenic Area

Yubulu Tiankeng Scenic Area sits at the eastern edge of the karst landscape around Xingyi in southwestern Guizhou, and is built around a large tiankeng — a giant natural sinkhole formed when the roof of an underground river cave collapses inward, leaving a deep, vertically walled limestone basin. The tiankeng at Yubulu is one of the more accessible examples of this rare karst feature in southwest China, and the surrounding park has been developed as a hiking and viewing destination.

A tiankeng is fundamentally a geological accident on a grand scale. The Yubulu sinkhole was created over hundreds of thousands of years as rainwater percolated through the limestone, enlarged a subterranean river, and slowly dissolved the rock until the roof could no longer support its own weight and fell into the void below. What is left today is a circular depression with near-vertical walls, a flat floor of collapsed rubble, and a small farming village and fields tucked out of sight at the bottom — a "hidden valley" effect that gives tiankeng their appeal.

The scenic area has built a network of walking trails and stepped paths around the rim and down toward the sinkhole floor, with viewing decks positioned to give both top-down and bottom-up perspectives. The vegetation inside the tiankeng is lush and sheltered — a humid microclimate distinct from the surrounding plateau — and the trailside flora is interesting to botanically minded travelers. Bird life is rich, particularly in the early morning.

For most visitors the experience is half geology lesson, half photography. Yubulu is less visited than Wanfenglin or Malinghe, so on a weekday the rim trails can be nearly empty. Allow two to three hours for a relaxed walk; comfortable walking shoes, water, and sun protection are essential, and there is little shade on the rim sections.

As with all karst features, the appeal depends on your interest in geology. Travelers who have already seen the Yangshuo peak forest, the Libo cone karst, or the giant tiankengs of Chongqing and Guangxi will find Yubulu a smaller but very accessible example, and a worthwhile half-day stop if combined with other Xingyi-area sites.
