Qianxinan Prefecture Museum (New Hall)

The Qianxinan Prefecture Museum, opened in its new building at Jushan Square in central Xingyi, is the regional museum for the Bouyei and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of southwestern Guizhou, and the single best introduction to the deep history and ethnic complexity of an area that most foreign travelers pass through quickly on the way to the karst landscapes. Designed by Westline Studio with a striking white-and-black facade that incorporates Bouyei and Miao design motifs, the building is itself worth seeing.

The collection is large — over 7,000 catalogued items — and is organized around a chronological narrative that divides regional history into three phases: pre-Yelang, Yelang, and post-Yelang. Yelang was an ancient polity in what is now southwestern China that gave rise to the Chinese idiom "Yelang thinks too highly of itself" (yelang zida), and the museum makes a serious effort to place the culture on its own terms rather than as a footnote to central Chinese history.

Exhibits cover stone tools, pottery, bronzes (particularly distinctive drums and weapons), and later ceramics and household objects, alongside displays on the material culture of the Bouyei, Miao, Yi, and Hui peoples who still live in the prefecture today. Ethnographic sections include traditional textiles — indigo batik, embroidery, and silver ornaments — agricultural tools, musical instruments, and festival paraphernalia. The museum does a good job of presenting these as living traditions rather than relics.

For foreign travelers, the museum works best at the beginning of a Xingyi-area itinerary. A one-to-two-hour visit gives context for the Bouyei villages, the karst landscape, and the political history of southwest China in a way that no individual scenic spot can — and the English labeling, while limited, is sufficient to follow the main threads with the help of a translation app.

The museum is located in the city center and is easy to fit into a half-day between arrival and a trip out to the karst sites. Admission procedures and opening hours can vary, so it is worth confirming locally. Combine with a walk around Jushan Square for an easy introduction to contemporary Xingyi.
