Nanlong Buyi Ancient Village

Nanlong Bouyei Ancient Village is a traditional Bouyei (Buyi) settlement in the karst hills south of Xingyi in southwestern Guizhou, and one of the better-preserved old villages in the wider Wanfenglin area. Covering roughly two square kilometers and home to a few hundred Bouyei residents, Nanlong is built in the typical pattern of southwest China's ethnic-minority hill settlements: dense clusters of two-storey wooden houses with stone foundations and tile roofs, narrow flagstone lanes, and small shrines tucked into the angles of the lanes.

The Bouyei are an indigenous Tai-related people of the Guizhou karst region, and Nanlong's long history is reflected in the village's fabric. Many of the houses are centuries old, with hand-carved wooden screens, dark-stained timber, and upturned eaves typical of the regional style. Old banyan trees dominate the village entrances, and the lanes follow the contours of the surrounding karst hills rather than any grid — giving the village a maze-like, organic character that rewards slow wandering.

Compared with Xiana Hui inside the Wanfenglin basin, Nanlong is more remote and has been less adapted to tourism. There are fewer stalls, fewer guesthouses, and less infrastructure for visitors — which is exactly its appeal. Daily life here is still primarily agricultural: rice, vegetables, livestock, and small-scale forestry. The village is known in Bouyei circles for preserving elements of the group's intangible cultural heritage, including the "eight-tone" ensemble music, indigo batik, and antiphonal singing traditions.

For independent travelers, Nanlong works best for those who enjoy ethnographic and architectural exploration at a slow pace rather than for visitors expecting formal sightseeing. There is no fixed circuit and no ticket booth in the conventional sense; visitors walk the lanes, observe, photograph respectfully, and stop at the small family workshops that sell batik cloth, embroidered goods, and simple meals.

To visit Nanlong, allow a half-day including transport from Xingyi, and come prepared with cash, water, and a translation app — Mandarin is widely spoken but Bouyei is the home language. The road to the village passes through attractive karst countryside, so the journey is part of the experience. For travelers with a serious interest in Bouyei culture, Nanlong is the most authentic single stop in the Xingyi area.
