About Plum Garden
Plum Garden is a 4A-rated park on the southern slope of Xushan Hill in Wuxi's western suburbs, one of the city's most established classical gardens and its best-known destination for plum blossom viewing. Originally laid out in 1912 as a private garden for the Rong brothers, prominent local industrialists who helped shape modern Wuxi's textile and flour industries, the park retains the layered history of early-20th-century Jiangnan elite gardens, combining traditional landscape design with the personal tastes of its founders.
The garden is built around the natural slope of the hill, with stone paths, terraces, pavilions, and small temples climbing gradually from the entrance up toward the ridgeline. The layout is less formally symmetrical than a courtyard garden, instead unfolding as a series of terraced groves and viewpoints, each opening onto different angles of the plum trees below and the wider Wuxi landscape beyond. Several of the Rong family's original buildings still stand within the park, including a memorial hall and a small ornamental gateway, giving the site a layer of Republican-era history alongside its natural appeal.
Plum Garden is most visited in late winter and early spring, when its thousands of plum trees come into bloom in waves of white, pink, and red across the hillside. The bloom typically runs from February into March, and at peak season the garden draws large crowds of visitors and photographers, with a local saying that "Wuxi's spring begins at Plum Garden" reflecting the park's place in the city's seasonal rhythm. Outside of plum blossom season, the garden remains a quiet, leafy escape on the city's western edge, with cooler air and good views over the surrounding hills and lakeshore.
A relaxed visit typically takes an hour or two, and the garden's location near Wuxi's Tai Lake attractions makes it easy to combine with Turtle Head Isle, Li Garden, or the Lingshan area in a single day focused on the city's parks and gardens. For visitors planning a late-winter trip to Wuxi, timing a visit to coincide with the plum blossom peak is one of the most rewarding seasonal experiences the city offers.
