Nanyan Palace (Wudangshan)

Nanyan Palace is one of the most dramatic and celebrated temples of Wudang Mountain in Hubei province, clinging to a sheer cliff face high on the slopes of Wudangshan. As a key component of the Wudang Mountain Ancient Building Complex, the UNESCO World Heritage Site that spreads across the range, it is also one of the finest examples of Taoist architecture built directly into a vertiginous natural setting, comparable in its precarious beauty to the famous Hanging Monastery of Hengshan.

The temple was first established in the late thirteenth century, during the Yuan dynasty, and was greatly expanded in the early fifteenth century on the orders of the Yongle Emperor of the Ming. The whole complex is wedged into the rock of the South Cliff, with halls, pavilions, and shrines following the contours of the mountain rather than the usual symmetry of a Chinese temple. Its most famous feature is the Dragon-Head Incense, a stone beam carved in the shape of a dragon that juts out over the abyss, from which pilgrims in centuries past would burn incense at terrifying height as an act of devotion to Zhenwu, the Taoist deity who is the patron of Wudang Mountain.

Within the complex, the surviving buildings include the stone hall of Tianyi Zhenqing, the main hall, the Liangyi Hall, and the South Heaven Gate, together with natural features such as the Flying Ascension Cliff, the legendary site where Zhenwu achieved immortality and rose to the heavens. The combination of carved architecture, exposed rock, and panoramic views over the Wudang peaks creates an atmosphere that is both austere and transcendent, and it is easy to see why Nanyan has been revered for centuries as one of the most numinous spots on the mountain.

To reach Nanyan Palace, visitors typically take the scenic-area shuttle to the Wuya Ridge, or Crow Ridge, stop and then walk through the South Heaven Gate. The temple is a key stop on the classic route around Wudang Mountain, easily paired with the Purple Cloud Palace lower down and the Golden Summit above.
