Fangdong Scenic Area

Fangdong, or Square Cave, is a dramatic cliffside zone set on the western edge of the Lingyan area within the Yandang Mountain range near Wenzhou. Like the other famous sub-zones of Yandang, it is built around the volcanic landscape that has made this part of the region so celebrated, but its defining feature is a long, elevated walkway carved into the face of a sheer cliff, offering a completely different perspective on the mountain. For visitors who enjoy dramatic, high-altitude walking, it is one of the most rewarding stops in the area.

The path follows what is known as the Silver Cliff Sky Corridor, a stretch of walkway hewn along the natural shelves and ledges of the rock face. Walking along it, you move past the entrance of the cave itself, where three small springs drip into pools of drinkable water, and through a sequence of strangely named rock features, including Blade Cave, Cloud Sky Bridge, Hanging Bell, Plum Blossom Cave, and Gathering of Immortals Pavilion. The combination of exposed cliff walking, sudden openings, and surprising rock shapes makes every section feel theatrical.

Inside the cave, the rock has been carved and weathered into chambers and niches, some of them holding small shrines or places to rest out of the wind. The view out from the cave mouth is one of the great panoramas of the Yandang range, with green peaks folding into the distance and the valley dropping away below your feet. Because the path sits high on the cliff, the sense of space and exposure is part of the appeal, and the rock walls overhead give a vivid sense of the volcanic forces that shaped the landscape.

Fangdong combines naturally with the nearby Lingyan zone, so visitors often walk both in a single outing. The path is well maintained and safe, with railings throughout, but comfortable shoes and a head for heights help. For anyone touring the Yandang Mountain area, Fangdong offers a quieter, more atmospheric corner of the range and some of the most memorable cliff-edge views in the Wenzhou region.
