Silk Road Mountain Resort

The Silk Road Mountain Resort (Sichou Zhi Lu Shandi Dujia Qu) is a 4A-rated mountain resort in the Tian Shan north of Urumqi county, occupying roughly twelve square kilometers of the Shuixigou valley. It sits between roughly 1,800 and 3,000 meters in altitude and operates as a year-round destination, with a ski area in winter, alpine meadows and hiking in summer, and a base area of hotels and facilities that function across seasons.

The resort occupies a north-facing slope in the northern Tian Shan fold belt. Annual temperature variation here is moderated by the altitude and by the so-called temperature-inversion belt of the valley floor, which keeps summer means around twenty-four degrees centigrade with low humidity, and winter means around minus ten with a high percentage of clear days. Particulate readings are consistently very low. These conditions are the foundation of the resort's positioning as both a summer escape from the heat of the Junggar Basin and a winter destination built on reliable natural snow.

In winter the resort functions as one of the largest ski areas in China, with more than 1.7 million square meters of skiable terrain, a network of high-speed lifts, and a gondola running to the summit ridge at around 2,500 meters. Several of its runs, including the Xuanzang and Aiwen avenues, are routinely cited among the most challenging in the country. The ski school, rental shops, and a timber-built summit lodge at about 2,300 meters support both day visitors and overnight guests.

In summer the same infrastructure serves hiking, mountain biking, and sightseeing. The gondola continues to run, giving non-skiers access to the alpine meadows and the ridgeline view over the Bogda massif, and a series of walking routes extend from the upper lift stations into the surrounding forest and pasture. The resort also hosts a range of supporting facilities, including a Silk Road cultural film set, a small museum of silicified wood, an exhibition of meteorites, and a Populus euphratica park.

A full visit typically takes one or two days depending on season and focus. The resort is the most developed single base for a mountain excursion from Urumqi and pairs naturally with the nearby Tianshan Grand Canyon scenic area and the hot-spring hotels of the wider Shuixigou area. The main access is by road from Urumqi, about an hour from the city center depending on traffic.
