Shen Garden (Shen's Garden)

Shen Garden, also known as Shen's Garden, is a 5A-rated classical Chinese garden on the southeastern edge of Shaoxing's historic core, famous as the setting for one of the most celebrated love stories in Chinese literary history. The garden is most strongly associated with the Southern Song dynasty poet Lu You, whose tragic relationship with his cousin and former wife Tang Wan unfolded here in the mid-twelfth century and was immortalized in the ci lyric "Chai Tou Feng," still one of the most widely memorized poems in the Chinese-language canon.

The current garden is a reconstruction and expansion of the original Southern Song site, organized into three main sections: the historic relics area, the eastern garden, and the southern garden. The relics area is the heart of the visit, centered on the Stone of Poetic Realm and a covered walkway lined with steles bearing classical poems, wind chimes, and the wooden plaques where lovers have for centuries left their own messages. The Six Dynasties Well and the adjacent gourd-shaped pool are the only surviving elements from the garden's earliest period, while the Lone Crane Pavilion serves as the focal point and is located near the famous Chai Tou Feng stele itself. The southern garden contains the Lu You Memorial Hall and the connecting Liangli Garden, while the eastern garden, also called the Love Garden, is organized around the heart-shaped Qiong Yao Pool, the Magpie Bridge, and other features tied to themes of romantic attachment.

Shen Garden distinguishes itself from other Jiangnan classical gardens through its distinctive night program. On select evenings, the garden opens for a cultural performance series at the Shuanggui Hall, where actors retell the story of Lu You and Tang Wan and perform selections from Shaoxing's regional opera traditions, including the Yingge Ban and the Lianhualao narrative arts. The night experience, with lantern-lit paths, live music, and the garden's reflective ponds, gives a noticeably different atmosphere from a daytime visit.

Shen Garden sits within a short walk of the Lu Xun Native Place, making it a natural pairing for a single half-day focused on Shaoxing's literary heritage. Most international visitors budget between one and two hours for a daytime visit, with the option of returning in the evening for the cultural program.
