Tianya Haijiao, which translates as "the edge of the sky and the rim of the sea," is a beach and rock-formation park at the western end of Sanya Bay, and one of the most symbolically loaded destinations in all of southern Hainan. As a national 5A-rated attraction, it draws visitors less for conventional beach activity than for the cultural and romantic resonance of standing at what Chinese literary tradition has long imagined as the very end of the world. The park's signature features are its granite rock formations, weather-carved boulders scattered along the shore and rising out of the sand and the shallow sea. The two most famous boulders are carved with characters reading "Tianya" and "Haijiao," meaning "edge of the sky" and "rim of the sea" respectively, and these inscriptions have become the visual shorthand for the entire destination. Over the centuries the site has been written about and painted as a place of distance, longing, and separation, and that cultural weight is still the principal draw today.

Beyond the famous paired boulders, the park stretches along a quiet stretch of coast with gardens, paved walking paths, smaller carved rocks, viewpoints, and patches of sandy beach. Several other notable rocks carry historical inscriptions, and the overall atmosphere is closer to a landscape garden than a beach resort, with the sea, the stones, and the planting carefully composed into viewpoints. The history of exile in Hainan, which for centuries saw senior officials banished to what was then considered the empire's remote southern frontier, is woven into the park's interpretive material.

Tianya Haijiao has also become strongly associated with romance, and the site draws large numbers of couples, particularly around Chinese Valentine's Day and the wedding-photography high season, who come for the symbolic weight of "the ends of the earth" as a backdrop. The park leans into this identity with dedicated photo spots and themed landscaping, though the underlying coastal scenery is rewarding for any visitor, not only couples. Most visitors spend two to three hours walking the grounds, with the best light for photography in the late afternoon.

The park is located on the western edge of Sanya Bay, within easy reach of downtown Sanya and the Dadonghai hotel strip by taxi, ride-hailing service, or public bus. Because it sits relatively close to the city, it works well as a half-day trip combined with other coastal sights or as a relaxed afternoon excursion.
