About Yong River
The Yongjiang River is the great waterway of Nanning, the tributary of the Pearl River system that winds from west to east through the heart of the city and divides it into northern and southern halves. For centuries the river has shaped the geography, economy, and identity of the capital of Guangxi, and today it forms the spine of the city's network of waterfront parks, promenades, and evening attractions. For travelers, it is both the physical reference point that organizes any map of Nanning and one of the most pleasant environments the city offers.
A long greenway system follows the banks of the Yongjiang through the urban stretch, with walking and cycling paths, planted gardens, viewing platforms, and waterside plazas stitching together the districts on both banks. Walking the riverfront is one of the best ways to get a feel for Nanning, since the path moves through both older neighborhoods and the newer business districts, revealing the layers of the city as it goes. The river's curves open up surprising sightlines between towers and bridges, and the landscaped embankments are especially popular with residents in the early morning and after dusk.
The river is most atmospheric at night, when the bridges, riverside buildings, and waterfront parks are illuminated and the reflections ripple across the water. Several redevelopment projects have recently upgraded the waterfront, adding new piers, plazas, and cultural facilities along the banks and tying them into the broader river-cruise system. Boat tours, including the popular Yongjiang night cruise, are the most structured way to experience the river, but simply walking a stretch of the embankment on a warm evening is equally rewarding.
The Yongjiang River is the thread that ties together many of Nanning's key attractions, from the historic Tingzi Wharf to the modern CBD skyline, and walking or cruising its waters is one of the simplest and most authentic ways to experience the city. Relaxed, scenic, and central to local life, it is the natural backbone of any first visit to the capital of Guangxi.
