Zhongshan Scenic Area

The Zhongshan Mountain Scenic Area, often called Purple Mountain after the local name for its main peak, is the vast wooded park that rises immediately to the east of central Nanjing and contains most of the city's most significant historical sites. Despite being sometimes labeled the "eastern suburbs," the mountain is in practice close enough to the city center that it functions as Nanjing's great urban park, and the combination of forested slopes, lakes, and monumental tombs makes it the single most important destination for any visitor trying to understand the city's layered history.

The scenic area is organized around three major clusters. To the west sits the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, the tomb of the founding emperor of the Ming dynasty, approached along a winding "sacred way" lined with stone animal guardians that is among the most celebrated examples of imperial funerary landscape in China. At the center rises Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum, a vast terraced memorial to the founding figure of the Republic of China, whose blue-tiled silhouette climbing the mountainside has become one of the iconic images of modern Nanjing. To the east lies the Linggu Temple area, an older Buddhist complex whose brick Void Hall and surrounding forested grounds offer a quieter counterpoint to the two monumental tombs.

Taken together, the mountain holds more than can reasonably be seen in a single day, and most visitors concentrate on either the Ming tomb and the sacred way, or the Sun Yat-sen memorial and its surroundings, depending on their interests. The forested setting, with walking paths, shuttle buses, and small pavilions scattered between the major sites, means that even the transitions between landmarks are pleasant. For foreign visitors, Purple Mountain is essential — it is where the imperial, republican, and religious layers of Nanjing's history all sit within walking distance of one another — and it rewards repeated visits for travelers with the time. Comfortable shoes, water, and a clear sense of which two or three sites to prioritize are the keys to a successful day here.
