Drepung Monastery

Drepung Monastery is one of the three great Gelugpa monastic universities of the Lhasa region and was historically the largest and most powerful monastery in the Tibetan world. Built on the slopes of a mountain a short drive west of the old city, Drepung is laid out across the hillside in a vast cascade of white-walled buildings that give the site its name, which translates roughly as Rice Heap, a reference to the rounded, granary-like form of the complex as seen from the valley below.

At its historical peak, Drepung housed many thousands of monks and functioned as a small monastic city, with colleges, assembly halls, printing houses, kitchens, and residential quarters arranged across the slope. The principal assembly hall, the Ganden Phodrang, once served as the seat of the Dalai Lamas before the Potala took over that role, and the architectural and institutional weight of the monastery is visible throughout the site. Chapels preserve outstanding examples of Tibetan religious art, including statues, murals, and ritual objects accumulated over centuries of patronage.

The visit to Drepung is one of the more atmospheric half-day excursions from Lhasa. The climb through the successive colleges, the open courtyards with their painted columns and gilded roofs, and the view across the Lhasa valley from the upper terraces together create a sense of the scale of Tibetan monastic life. Pilgrims move through the chapels in a steady stream, and the resident monks continue the daily round of prayer and study that has defined the site since its founding.

Drepung is particularly crowded during the Shoton festival in late summer, when a giant thangka painting is unfurled on the hillside above the monastery in one of the most spectacular annual events of the Lhasa religious calendar. For ordinary travelers, a quieter morning visit offers the best experience, and the monastery combines naturally with nearby Sera to give a full picture of the great Gelugpa institutions that shaped the religious life of the Tibetan capital.
