Lanzhou Danxia Scenic Area

The Lanzhou Ink Danxia Scenic Area is a substantial landscape destination on the Yellow River, occupying a position across two counties and two districts in the hinterland of Lanzhou. Identified by Chinese geologists as one of the most significant Danxia landform concentrations close to a major Chinese city, it has been developed as a comprehensive cultural and tourism project intended to showcase one of the most distinctive geological features of the Loess Plateau and the Gansu corridor. For visitors based in Lanzhou, it is one of the most rewarding day-trip options in the surrounding region.

The landscape is dominated by the Hongshanwan variant of the Danxia landform, complemented by cliff faces, isolated peaks, deep gorges, narrow slot canyons, and wind-carved rock formations. The Danxia landform itself is a category of red-bed sedimentary rock shaped by millions of years of water and wind erosion, producing the characteristic combinations of steep cliffs, layered colour bands, and unusual pillar and tower shapes. The Ink Danxia Scenic Area presents this geology at unusual scale, with the multi-coloured rock strata stretching over the visible landscape and giving the site its artistic name, drawn from a perceived resemblance to traditional Chinese ink painting.

The scenic area covers an overall planning footprint of roughly four hundred square kilometres, with the first-phase core visitor zone occupying a substantial portion of that total. The infrastructure of the core zone has been designed to allow close-up and elevated viewpoints of the principal formations, with walking trails, viewing platforms, and interpretive panels that explain the geology and the broader landscape history. The proximity of the site to the Yellow River adds another layer of visual interest, with the rock forms juxtaposed against the great river that has shaped the wider region.

For international visitors, the Ink Danxia Scenic Area is best treated as a focused day trip from Lanzhou, easily combined with other regional destinations as part of a longer Gansu itinerary. The site is located a short distance from both central Lanzhou and the city's airport, which makes it particularly convenient for travellers at the start or end of a Gansu trip. Allow a full day for the visit, with stops at multiple viewpoints and short walks along the main trails. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions; summer can be hot and winter cold, but the landscape is photogenic in all seasons.
