About Haigeng Park
Haigeng Park is the principal landscaped lakefront park along the northeastern shore of Dianchi Lake, occupying the section of the lakeside closest to central Kunming and serving as the main formal vantage point from which city residents and visitors take in the lake. The park sits adjacent to the long Haigeng Dam and to the Ethnic Village, and together these three elements form the most visited single stretch of the Dianchi shoreline, combining open lawns, planted gardens, and unobstructed views across the water to the Western Hills.
The park is laid out as a sequence of shaded walkways, lawns, and viewing platforms, with willows and other lakeside trees framing the view of the water and the mountain ridge on the opposite bank. Sculptures, gazebos, and small pavilions are scattered along the paths, and a paved walking and cycling route runs the length of the shoreline, connecting the park to the adjacent dam and the Ethnic Village entrance. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-oriented, with locals gathering for walking, cycling, photography, and weekend picnics, and the park's accessible, well-maintained layout makes it one of the easiest places in Kunming for visitors with limited mobility or with young children to enjoy the lake scenery.
For foreign visitors, Haigeng Park is the most comfortable and most accessible single spot from which to see Dianchi Lake, and it requires no admission fee or advance planning. A walk through the park typically fills an hour or two and can be combined with a visit to the Ethnic Village, a walk along the Haigeng Dam, or a cable car crossing to the Western Hills into a full half-day or day along the lakeshore. The park is at its most active — and most photogenic — during the winter months, when the migratory gulls gather along the lakeshore and the park fills with families feeding them, but the lakeside trees and the view of the Western Hills make it a pleasant stop at any time of year. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light and the most comfortable temperatures, particularly during the hot summer months.
