About Haigeng Dam

Haigeng Dam is the long embankment and promenade that runs along the northern shore of Dianchi Lake at the closest point to central Kunming, and it has become one of the most popular public spaces in the city for both residents and visitors. The dam is wide, paved, and open to the lake on one side, with the forested ridge of the Western Hills rising on the opposite bank, and its accessibility — only a short distance from the city center — makes it the easiest single place from which to take in the scale of the lake and the ring of mountains that surround it.

The dam is most famous as a winter destination, when large flocks of migratory black-headed gulls that travel from Siberia to spend the colder months on Dianchi gather along the lakeshore. During the gull season, the dam fills with visitors and locals who come to feed the birds, which have become remarkably tame and will take food directly from outstretched hands or swoop in close to the railings. The gulls wheeling above the water against the backdrop of the Western Hills have become one of the iconic winter images of Kunming, and the dam is the single best vantage point from which to experience them. Outside of the gull months, the dam remains a popular spot for walking, cycling, and watching the sunset over the lake.

For foreign visitors, Haigeng Dam is the most rewarding single free experience along the Dianchi lakeshore, and it is best visited in the early morning or late afternoon, when the light is at its best and the temperature is comfortable. A walk along the dam typically fills an hour or two and pairs naturally with a visit to the adjacent Haigeng Park, the Ethnic Village, or a cable car trip across to the Western Hills. The wind off the lake can be strong, particularly in winter, so layered clothing is advisable during the cooler months. Visitors who arrive during gull season should be prepared for crowds on weekends and holidays, but the spectacle of the birds is well worth sharing with the local families who make the dam such an active part of daily life in Kunming.
