Zhuxian Town Qifeng Ancient Garden

Qifeng Ancient Garden at Zhuxian Town is a cultural tourism project located north of Zhuxian Town, on the outskirts of Kaifeng, developed around the historic canal zone known as the Yunliang River. The site combines heritage architecture, gardens, ecological agriculture, and crafts demonstrations within a single planned precinct. It is designed to evoke the atmosphere of a Ming and Qing dynasty market town, drawing on Zhuxian's historical importance as one of the four great commercial towns of Henan during the late imperial period.

The master plan divides the park into eight functional zones, including an old-town streetscape, a lakeside scenic loop, a leisure resort area, a battlefield culture zone, an ecological farming experience area, a cultural creativity and wellness area, a wetland experience area, and a woodland sightseeing area. The first phase of development, which forms the core most visitors see today, focuses on the old-town streetscape, laid out in retro Qing and Ming architectural style with shops, residences, workshops, and small temples arranged along the canal.

What gives the site substance is its grounding in a real historical place. Zhuxian Town was a major inland port during the era when the canal system carried grain and goods across the North China plain, and the surrounding network of waterways shaped the town's prosperity. Although the modern complex is essentially a rebuilding, the planners have drawn on local history rather than inventing a generic "ancient town", and the inclusion of ecological and agricultural zones reflects the way the original settlement was woven into its landscape.

For international visitors, Qifeng Ancient Garden is best treated as a half-day excursion outside the city centre, offering a quieter, more rural counterpart to Kaifeng's intensive Song-themed attractions. The site is particularly pleasant in the early morning or late afternoon, when the canal-side streets are less crowded and the gardens are at their most atmospheric. Allow around three hours for a full visit. The shops and workshops offer local crafts, and the food stalls in the old-town zone are a good place to sample regional snacks.
