About Baotu Spring (Jinan)
Baotu Spring Scenic Area is the most celebrated of all the springs in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province long honored as the "City of Springs," and it stands at the head of the city's famous "Seventy-two Named Springs." Crowned the "Number One Spring under Heaven" and with a history of more than two thousand years, it has for centuries been the defining landmark of Jinan, celebrated in classical poetry and prose and drawing generations of travelers who come for the single purpose of watching its three great jets of water surge up from the earth.
The heart of the scenic area is the great spring itself, where three powerful columns of water boil up from a rectangular pool with such force and volume that they seem almost alive, and the surrounding park frames the scene with pavilions, bridges, willow-shaded walkways, and clear side pools filled with fish. The spring water emerges remarkably pure and at a steady temperature year-round, and the whole garden is built to show it off, with viewing platforms placed so that visitors can watch the three jets from different angles and feel the cool mist drifting off the surface.
Baotu Spring has a deep literary heritage. The modern writer Lao She made the spring famous to a generation of Chinese readers with his elegant essay on its beauty, and it has appeared in the work of countless earlier poets and scholars, so that standing beside the pool feels like stepping into a line of Chinese literature. Throughout the gardens, inscriptions, steles, and small memorial halls connect the landscape to this long cultural memory, and the tea house that brews its tea with the spring water offers a chance to taste what all the fuss is about.
Baotu Spring is easy to reach right in the center of Jinan and makes a natural half-day visit, often combined with nearby Daming Lake and the city's other famous springs into a full-day tour of Jinan's waterside landmarks. The park is busiest on weekends and during holidays, so an early morning arrival gives the calmest views of the jets. For anyone trying to understand why Jinan earned its reputation as the City of Springs, Baotu Spring is the essential starting point.
Cultural heritage
Baotu Spring heads Jinan's seventy-two famous springs, its three vents bubbling up since ancient times — the Qianlong Emperor praised it as the 'first spring under heaven'. The grounds gather centuries of stone inscriptions, pavilions and literary traces, including a memorial hall to the poet Li Qingzhao, making the spring the very symbol of Jinan as the 'City of Springs'.
Visiting: Strolling the grounds, visitors can lean on the rail and watch the water boil up into blossoming swirls amid drifting mist, sensing the old saying 'a spring by every house, a willow at every door' and the literary serenity unique to Jinan's springs.
