Peak Tram

The Peak Tram is the historic funicular railway that carries visitors from the lower slopes of Central up the steep incline of Hong Kong Island's central ridge to the Peak, threading a path through dense residential canopy and high-rise apartment blocks that crowd the lower portions of the route. Operating since the late nineteenth century, it is one of the oldest of its kind still in service and remains both a working piece of the city's transport infrastructure and one of its most celebrated tourist experiences.

The journey covers a short but extremely steep rise, with the cars tilted dramatically against the gradient as they ascend, producing the famous optical effect in which the surrounding tower blocks appear to lean at impossible angles as viewed from inside the carriage. Because the tram's capacity is limited and demand from tourists runs high throughout the day, queues can build quickly, particularly on weekends, public holidays, and clear evenings when the sunset view from the Peak draws the largest crowds. Travelers focused on minimizing waiting time often arrive early in the morning or later in the evening, and some choose to ride up by tram and return by road or on foot along one of the scenic looping trails that descend through the wooded slopes of the mid-levels.

For a Hong Kong itinerary, the Peak Tram works best as the approach to a visit to the Peak itself rather than as a standalone journey, since the experience is tightly tied to the destination at the top.
