Xilituzhao Monastery

Xilituzhao Temple, known informally to locals as the Small Temple in contrast to the larger Dazhao nearby, is one of the more substantial Tibetan Buddhist monasteries within the older quarters of Hohhot. Its Mongolian name refers to a seat of dharma or a teacher's throne, and its formal Chinese name translates as the Temple of Extended Life, reflecting its long religious significance within the city's network of Gelug, or Yellow Hat, Buddhist institutions.

Historically, Xilituzhao held considerable religious authority in the Hohhot region, and its importance is reflected in the scale and craftsmanship of its halls, stupas, and courtyards, which together form one of the more densely packed monastic complexes in the old city. The layout centers on a main assembly hall surrounded by smaller chapels, with characteristic white and gilded elements visible above the rooftops, marking it visually as part of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition even as the underlying architecture follows the pattern of northern Chinese temple complexes.

Inside, the temple preserves devotional art, scriptures, and ritual objects associated with the Gelug school, and the halls remain in active liturgical use, so visitors during prayer times encounter monks chanting, burning incense, and tending butter lamps rather than an empty historic monument. The atmosphere is quieter and more intimate than at the larger Dazhao, which appeals to visitors looking for a calmer, less crowded religious site within walking distance.

For a Hohhot itinerary, Xilituzhao is best visited in combination with Dazhao Temple and Saishang Old Street, since all three sit close together in the southern old city and together give a fuller picture of Hohhot's monastic heritage. A relatively short visit is enough to appreciate the temple's main halls and courtyards, and the site is particularly rewarding for travelers with an interest in Tibetan Buddhism and the religious history of the Mongolian plateau.
