Sun Island Snow Expo

Sun Island Snow Expo is Harbin's major annual snow sculpture exhibition, held within the Sun Island Scenic Area on the northern bank of the Songhua River. Unlike the illuminated ice sculptures found at Harbin Ice and Snow World, the Snow Expo focuses entirely on snow sculpture, large works carved directly from packed snow rather than ice blocks, which gives the artworks a softer, more textured appearance suited to viewing in natural daylight.

Each year, sculptors from China and abroad contribute large-scale snow sculptures to the exhibition, often built around a rotating theme, and the resulting artworks range from detailed figurative carvings to sweeping architectural and fantasy-inspired designs. Because the sculptures rely on natural snow and cold temperatures rather than colored lighting for their visual impact, the Snow Expo tends to be best appreciated during the day, when the fine detail and pure white surfaces of the carvings are easiest to see, in contrast to the after-dark spectacle of the city's ice attractions.
