Lingyin Flying Peak Scenic Area

The Feilai Peak Scenic Area, set against the wooded hills to the west of West Lake, is a complex of religious art and temple architecture that ranks among the most important Buddhist sites in eastern China. It brings together two main attractions, the ancient Lingyin Temple and the carved cliffs of Feilai Peak itself, in a single densely layered landscape.

Feilai Peak, though modest in height, holds one of the most remarkable concentrations of religious carving in the region. Across its limestone faces are several hundred Buddhist images, cut into the rock over many dynasties, depicting buddhas, bodhisattvas, monks, and attendants in styles that range from the early medieval to later periods. Within the same scenic area stands Lingyin Temple, one of the oldest and most prestigious Buddhist monasteries in Hangzhou. Together, the temple and the peak make the area a single devotional landscape in which the cave shrines outside and the halls of the monastery complement one another, and most visitors experience them as a continuous circuit.
