Hanxianyan Scenic Area

Hanxian Rock is a 4A-level national scenic area in Huichang county on Ganzhou's eastern fringe, a Danxa red-sandstone landscape named for Han Zhongli, one of the legendary Eight Immortals of Chinese tradition, who is said to have attained the Way here. Combining strange rock formations, cliffside temples, and a lake-and-river gallery, it is one of the most storied natural sites in southern Jiangxi. For travelers drawn to landscapes layered with legend, it is a rewarding full-day destination.

The main scenic area is a labyrinth of Danxia peaks, narrow gorges, and natural rock chambers, with viewpoints and pavilions perched among formations that have earned names and stories over the centuries. Paths lead through clefts in the rock, up to panoramic terraces, and past caves and shrines associated with the Eight Immortals tradition, giving the place an atmosphere that is part nature and part legend. Nearby, Hanxian Lake stretches along a reservoir framed by red cliffs, offering a boat journey through scenery often described as a "ten-li gallery" of sculpted rock.

A full visit takes most of a day, combining the rock area on foot with the lake boat trip, and in the evenings a large-scale outdoor light-and-sound show staged on the water brings the Eight Immortals legend to life through projection, music, and performance. The walking involves steps and some exposure, so sturdy shoes and a head for heights help, and spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for the trails. Hanxian Rock sits well east of downtown Ganzhou and is best treated as a dedicated outing, ideally staying into the evening if you want to see the light show.
