Dalian Shell Museum

The Dalian Shell Museum, housed in a striking shell-shaped building on the northwest corner of Xinghai Square, is one of the most unusual museums in northeast China. Dedicated to shells, mollusks, and the wider natural history of the sea, it is both an architectural landmark and an unexpectedly rich collection that appeals to families, naturalists, and photographers alike. For travelers visiting Xinghai Square and the surrounding coastal attractions, it makes a rewarding hour or two of exploration.

The museum building is itself the first exhibit. The new structure is shaped like an enormous marine shell, with a facade of overlapping curved surfaces that references conch and nautilus forms. Inside, the visitor route follows a spiral ramp that climbs about eight hundred meters through the building, mimicking the interior cavity of a shell. The effect is both theatrical and educational: as visitors ascend, they pass through a carefully sequenced display of specimens organized by taxonomy, geography, and habitat.

The collection itself is substantial, with thousands of shell specimens drawn from seas and oceans around the world. The displays cover the biology of mollusks — their anatomy, life cycles, predators, and habitats — as well as the cultural history of shells in art, currency, jewelry, and cuisine. Highlights include giant clam shells, intricate chambered nautiluses, poisonous cone shells, and the delicate, fluorescent-sheened abalones that have been prized in Chinese art for centuries.
