About Fairy Mountain National Forest Park

Fairy Mountain National Forest Park (Xiannüshan) is a highland reserve in Wulong County, about three hours' drive from downtown Chongqing, celebrated for a landscape that feels surprisingly un-Chinese: rolling alpine meadows, dense spruce and pine forests, and ridgelines that could easily be mistaken for the European Alps. Part of the larger Wulong Karst UNESCO World Heritage cluster, it offers a cool-weather escape that has become especially popular during Chongqing's sweltering summers.

The park is best known for what locals call its "four wonders" — the sea of forest, the curious peaks, the grasslands, and the winter snowfield. The meadows stretch across a plateau at roughly two thousand meters elevation, where horses and cattle graze and footpaths weave through wildflowers in the warmer months. When snow falls between December and February, the same landscape transforms into the closest thing southwest China has to a ski resort, with gentle slopes that suit beginners and families.

Beyond its scenic appeal, Fairy Mountain serves as a natural base for exploring the broader Wulong region. Many visitors pair a day here with the nearby Three Natural Bridges and the Longshuixia Fissure Gorge, experiencing the contrast between the underground karst drama below and the open alpine scenery above. The forest also supports a rich variety of birdlife and wildflowers, rewarding visitors who slow down to walk rather than simply driving from viewpoint to viewpoint.

Travelers should come prepared for big temperature swings — even midsummer nights can drop to ten degrees — and for the simple mountain infrastructure, which leans toward family-friendly tourism rather than rugged wilderness. The cable car, the meadow walks, and the high ridgeline views are the highlights; allow a half-day to a full day to enjoy them at a relaxed pace.
