About Kaiyuan Temple Thai Buddha Hall

The Thai Buddha Hall of Kaiyuan Temple, located on Dongshan Road across from Huiru Park on the forested slopes above Chaozhou, is one of the more distinctive Buddhist sites in eastern Guangdong. It is an auxiliary hall of the Tang-era Kaiyuan Temple complex downtown, but architecturally it belongs to a completely different tradition: a purpose-built Thai-style Theravada Buddhist hall, gilded and roofed in the tiered, finial-crowned style typical of Thai temples.

This Thai presence is not random. Chaozhou has long been one of the most important sources of Chinese emigration to Southeast Asia, and Teochew communities have played a major role in Thai commerce and culture for several centuries. The Thai Buddha Hall was built to honor and formalize that relationship, and its construction involved collaboration with Thai Buddhist institutions. Few sites in China make the overseas Teochew connection as visible as this one.

Inside, the hall houses a large gilded Buddha image in Thai style, set against decorated walls and a ceiling of carved and lacquered wood. The proportions, the mandorla behind the statue, and the ornamentation are markedly different from the Mahayana imagery of the main Kaiyuan Temple downtown. Visitors used to Chinese Buddhist art will find the contrast instructive; visitors familiar with Thai wats will recognize the visual vocabulary immediately.

The setting above the city adds to the appeal. The hall sits on a hillside with views over Chaozhou, with gardens, palm trees, and smaller subsidiary pavilions surrounding it. It is a calm, uncrowded spot — fewer international tourists make the short trip out here, and on a weekday morning you may have the courtyard largely to yourself. For travelers interested in the global footprint of Teochew Buddhism, the architecture of Theravada temples, or simply a quiet viewpoint above Chaozhou, the Thai Buddha Hall is a worthwhile and slightly offbeat addition to a standard city itinerary.
