Doumen Waterborne Wedding Custom

Doumen's waterborne wedding is a marriage custom passed down among the Tanka 'boat people' of the Pearl River estuary. It grew out of a life lived on boats and along the water, and survives in the Doumen area today.

Many of the ceremony's stages take place aboard boats, accompanied by sung laments in the saltwater-song style, in which the bride pours out her feelings in song and relatives answer in kind. Ritual, chant, and water-town life are tightly interwoven.

As a national-level item of intangible cultural heritage, the Doumen waterborne wedding preserves the Tanka community's distinctive marriage customs and singing tradition, and is an important record of estuary boat-people culture.
