Nguồn gốc

Qinqiang is an ancient operatic style formed in the Guanzhong region, born of local folk music and the Guanzhong dialect, popular across Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai, and Xinjiang and regarded as the ancestor of the bangzi clapper-opera family.

Loại hình nghệ thuật

Its music divides into joyful and sorrowful modes; the male and painted-face roles sing in a high, stirring, mournfully heroic register while the female roles are tender and intricate, all kept in time by a wooden clapper, with a full complement of role types and the four skills of song, gesture, speech, and combat.

Ý nghĩa văn hóa

As the most influential local grand opera of the northwest, Qinqiang carries the historical memory and folk aesthetics of Guanzhong; inscribed on the first national intangible-heritage list in 2006, it is a key living example for studying the evolution of Chinese operatic vocal styles.

Nơi trải nghiệm

Qinqiang is still performed at theaters, temple fairs, and cultural-tourism districts in Xi'an and across Guanzhong, offering an important way to understand Shaanxi's folk operatic culture.
