Giới thiệu về Nham Hồ Quang
Huguangyan Maar Lake is one of Zhanjiang's most distinctive natural landmarks, a volcanic crater lake formed by ancient phreatomagmatic eruptions and now the centerpiece of a national geological park. The site pairs a mirror-like body of water with dense subtropical forest, offering foreign travelers a quiet counterpoint to the busy Guangdong coast. Marked as a 4A scenic area, it is well equipped with walking trails, boardwalks, and a small museum that explains the lake's unusual geology.
The lake itself is renowned for two scientific puzzles. First, its water level stays remarkably stable regardless of drought or heavy rain, with no obvious surface inlet or outlet to explain it. Second, fallen leaves that drift onto the surface seem to vanish without accumulating on the bed, a phenomenon geologists attribute to the unique chemistry and microbial activity of the maar basin. These quirks have made Huguangyan a reference site for the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior, which recognizes it as a globally important maar-type crater.
Beyond geology, the surrounding park protects patches of primary subtropical monsoon forest, home to dragon trees, banyans, and birds such as the white-throated kingfisher. Visitors walking the loop trail around the crater rim pass cliffside pavilions, the old Sihai Temple, and grassy clearings where locals practice tai chi at dawn. The air is noticeably cleaner than downtown Zhanjiang, and temperatures inside the crater run several degrees cooler than the city, making the park a favored summer escape.
For independent travelers, Huguangyan lies about eighteen kilometers southwest of downtown Zhanjiang and is reachable by city bus or a short taxi ride. Most visits take two to three hours at a leisurely pace. Pack water and sunscreen, since facilities inside the crater basin are limited. Photography conditions are best in the early morning, when mist clings to the forest and the lake surface turns glassy, reflecting the green amphitheater of cliffs that cradles it. The geological museum near the main entrance is worth a short stop before you begin the loop, since it frames what you are about to see in clear, accessible language.
